Meet Tanya Dimitrov – Inspiring Through the Art and Rhythms of Balkan Dance

Starting her dance journey at just six years old in Bulgaria, Tanya Dimitrov has dedicated her life to mastering the beauty, diversity, and cultural depth of dance.

With a lifelong passion for dance and cultural heritage, she brings a wealth of experience, artistry, and scholarship to the stage. Born and raised in Bulgaria, Tanya’s dance journey began with the intricate rhythms and vibrant traditions of Bulgarian folk dance — a love that has shaped her professional career across continents.

As an accomplished dancer, choreographer, and educator, Tanya has mastered a diverse range of dance forms. She has performed and taught internationally, and today she is the CEO of Balkan Community Culture and Heritage Organization, and Artistic Director and Choreographer of the Balkanik Dance Group in Phoenix, Arizona, where she inspires dancers of all ages to connect with their heritage through movement.

Tanya’s deep knowledge of Bulgarian folk traditions goes far beyond the steps. Her expertise lies in understanding the rich cultural contexts, storytelling, and unique musical structures that make Bulgarian dance so captivating — especially its legendary uneven rhythms.

At the 1st Eastern European Folk Festival, Tanya will lead one of our Balkan Folk Dance Master Classes, guiding participants through the dynamic, joyful, and expressive vocabulary of different Balkan folk dances.

She will also present her fascinating lecture:

🎓 "Dancing in Asymmetry" – Uneven Rhythms in Bulgarian Folk Dances. Bulgarian folk music is famous for its complex time signatures — rhythms that feel both playful and mesmerizing, ranging from 5/8 and 7/8 to 11/16 and beyond. Tanya’s presentation will explore the cultural origins of these rhythms, how they shape the movement, and why they are a source of pride and identity for Bulgarians. Through live demonstration, storytelling, and interactive examples, she will reveal how dancers embody this “musical asymmetry” to create performances that are both technically challenging and emotionally powerful.

Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a complete beginner, Tanya’s class and lecture will deepen your understanding of Balkan dance and inspire you to move with greater rhythm, expression, and joy.
