Meet Our Special Guest: Maestro Vanja Gjumar Nikolovski

The 2nd Annual Eastern European Folk Festival is honored to welcome internationally acclaimed conductor and composer Maestro Vanja Gjumar Nikolovski as our special guest.
Maestro Nikolovski is a distinguished artist whose career bridges Europe and the United States. He graduated with majors in conducting and composition from the Saints Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje Faculty of Music in Macedonia, and later specialized in opera and orchestral conducting at the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory in St. Petersburg, Russia. In 2018, he earned his Doctor of Arts degree in conducting from Arizona State University.

Throughout his remarkable career, Maestro Nikolovski has served as principal conductor of the Macedonian Opera and Ballet and has collaborated as a guest conductor with leading ensembles such as the Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Macedonian Radio Choir. His conducting engagements have taken him across Europe and the United States, including performances in St. Petersburg, Belgrade, Zadar, Split, Portugal, and major American cities such as Washington, DC, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. He also served as Music Director and Conductor of the Chandler Symphony for six years.
As a composer, Maestro Nikolovski has received numerous national awards in Macedonia. His symphonic work Kartchner Caverns Magic won first prize in a national competition in 2014, while The Dance of the Gallstones earned third prize. His choral-orchestral piece Kliment received first prize in 2015, and Zigurati was awarded the prestigious Panche Peshev Prize for the most successful composition of the year.
His compositions have been performed internationally across Switzerland, Austria, France, Russia, Turkey, Poland, Great Britain, Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Germany, Ukraine, and the United States. His work is regularly featured in major festivals such as the Days of Macedonian Music, Skopje Summer Music Festival, and Ohrid Summer Music Festival.
Today, Maestro Nikolovski continues to enrich the cultural landscape of Arizona as Principal Conductor of the Scottsdale Philharmonic and as Adjunct Faculty at Mesa Community College. Together with his family, he resides in Arizona, where he remains an active and inspiring force in the arts community.
