Meet – A Lifetime Devoted to Folklore and Cultural Heritage

Born in 1971 in the small town of Brčko, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jasmin Mesic grew up immersed in his community’s traditions. He first discovered the magic of folklore through school programs, where he learned his first steps. His passion for dance soon opened the doors to the city’s cultural and artistic society, where he auditioned successfully for the children’s folklore ensemble.
It wasn’t long before his talent, dedication, and skill earned him a place in the prestigious 1st Folkloric Ensemble—as the youngest dancer in the group. At just 14, Jasmin was already performing advanced material alongside adults, handling the challenges with the professionalism of a seasoned artist. Recognizing his potential, his mentors sent him to advanced seminars and professional lectures, where he learned from renowned choreographers, scenographers, ethnographers, and celebrated vocal interpreters of traditional music.
Jasmin trained with some of the most respected ensembles in the Balkans, including:
KUD Kolo (Belgrade)
KUD Lado (Zagreb)
KUD Tanec (Skopje)
KUD Slobodan Princip Seljo (Sarajevo)
In 1989, Jasmin organized his first independent project, Roma Night, which won 1st place at the national competition in Sarajevo. The authenticity of the Roma customs, stage design, and musical arrangements earned him widespread recognition. This success propelled him onto the national and European stage, where he participated in countless performances, lectures, and cultural projects.
In 1999, Jasmin and his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and by 2000, he had founded the Bosnian Herzegovinian Association, creating a space for children, youth, and adults to celebrate and preserve their cultural identity. Over the years, three generations of dancers have trained under his leadership, and today he is proudly working with the fourth generation.
Jasmin’s group, KUD Izvor, has built strong partnerships with organizations across North America, Canada, and Europe. His openness in sharing knowledge, offering choreography, and providing music has made him a respected figure in the folk community.
Some of his notable achievements include:
Winning 1st place at the Turkish Folklore Olympiad in Las Vegas (2013) with the choreography Turkish Dance
Representing Bosnia and Herzegovina twice on the Phoenix Suns NBA stadium floor
Leading countless folklore shows, concerts, and festivals both locally and internationally
Today, Jasmin serves as President of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian Cultural Center Arizona, choreographer of the 1st folklore ensemble KUD Izvor, and choreographer of the group’s adult ensemble. His work continues to inspire dancers, preserve traditions, and bring communities together through the joy of folklore.
You can meet and learn from Jasmin at the 1st Eastern European Folk Festival in Phoenix, Arizona, on September 13, 2025, where he will be one of our featured Balkan Folk Dance Master Class instructors. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience his artistry, energy, and deep cultural knowledge!
